Broadband speeds: what’s normal and what’s not?

Last week, most of you said you check your broadband speed regularly which made me realise I should probably start doing the same.

If you haven’t checked in a while either, it’s worth doing. A speed test can tell you if you’re getting the service you’re paying for, help spot issues with your setup, or give you the evidence you need if you’re thinking of switching providers.

But once you’ve run the test, what do those numbers actually mean?

:magnifying_glass_tilted_left: Quick breakdown:

  • Download speed affects how quickly things load or stream—think Netflix or file downloads.
  • Upload speed is key for video calls, gaming, and sending files.
  • Ping tells you how fast your connection reacts—low ping is better for gaming or anything real-time.
  • Jitter measures how stable your connection is, which can affect streaming and calls.

Already tested yours? Feel free to share how it’s going—or any tips that helped improve your connection!

In the spirit of transparency, I’ll share my speed test results. I got 8.9 Mbps download / 2.4 Mbps upload.

So, basically… a snail is probably faster than my internet :joy:
