The simple Wi-Fi check most people never do 💡

Have you come across people talking about 2.4GHz or 5GHz and thought “that’s a touch technical for me”?

One of our team has just shared that she didn’t realise the slow and unreliable connections she was getting at home might be down to these numbers.

The good news is, you don’t need to know much to make a difference. They refer to the band your device is using — 2.4GHz or 5GHz - you could think of it a bit like ye olde radio frequencies, maybe?

And the difference they make is actually pretty simple:

  • 2.4GHz usually reaches further through walls
  • 5GHz is faster but you need to be closer to the router
  • most routers provide both, but many of us never check which one they’re on
  • devices usually select a band automatically and can even change as you move from one room to another (this is where our colleague noticed it, from a notification on her device)

I came across this when I was trying to fix my broken internet. Turned out, in spite of my ISP’s constant insistence that everything was fine and it was all my fault for … not sure what, exactly … that a visit from a nice Openreach engineer who replaced the entire socket / plate thingy for the first time in possibly 40 years, helped no end. Still pretty slow, but at least reliably slow. But I couldn’t work out how to change bands on either the router or a device, so I gave up (and since the fix, I’m afraid to twiddle with anything lest I get more side-eye from the ISP). Would be interested to hear from anyone relatively non-technical if it’s worth trying in future though as my broadband needs all the help it can get.
